Stay Connected!
Nature Rx at Stephen F. Austin State University is a collaborative wellness initiative between SFA Counseling Services and the Outdoor Pursuits program within Campus Recreation. Rooted in research that supports the mental health benefits of time spent in nature and connection with animals, this program helps students explore the outdoors as a resource for stress management, emotional wellbeing, and personal growth.
Students can participate in a variety of nature-based wellness experiences, including guided hikes through the Pineywoods, beginner-friendly kayaking and paddleboarding trips, rock wall workshops focused on trust and resilience, and group outings to nearby state parks. These activities are co-facilitated by licensed counselors and trained Outdoor Pursuits staff and are designed to be inclusive, beginner-friendly, and supportive of all ability levels.
In addition to outdoor recreation, the program incorporates evidence-based animal-assisted interventions. Equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions allow students to engage in therapeutic experiences with horses, promoting self-awareness, emotional regulation, and healing. Canine-assisted therapy is also available through Counseling Services, where students can spend time with therapy dogs during walk-in hours, outreach events, and structured sessions designed to reduce anxiety and foster connection.
We also offer seasonal nature therapy workshops and retreats, such as Forest Therapy walks and outdoor mindfulness groups during high-stress times like midterms and finals. Transportation, gear, and meals are often provided to reduce barriers to participation.
Nature Rx at SFA empowers students to reconnect with the natural world—and with themselves. Whether through a reflective walk in the woods, bonding with a therapy dog, or learning to paddle on a quiet lake, these experiences help students find balance, calm, and community as part of their SFA journey.
