The Campus Nature Rx Network (CNRx) addresses the need for effective, attractive, low-cost, and worthwhile approaches to engaging college students in nature. As part of a growing coalition of colleges, universities, and professionals, campus leaders develop and expand inclusive and transformative Nature Rx programs customized to each campus's context, culture, and goals.

Acceptance into a desired college or university can represent the culmination of many young people's aspirations. Engaging in intellectually stimulating courses, connecting with dynamic faculty, and bonding with fellow students can be a profoundly enriching and transformative experience. However, for many college students today, the pressures of social media, academic demands, and concerns about everything from finances and relationships to climate change and environmental degradation often eclipse the joys of student life. This leaves millions of young people grappling with pervasive stress, anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges.

In January 2019, representatives from four campuses — Cornell University, the University of California-Davis, the University of Minnesota and William & Mary (W&M) — met to discuss approaches to promoting mental and physical health through campus nature engagement. From this meeting came the creation of the Campus Nature Rx Network — today, a growing coalition of 54 colleges and universities.

At their respective institutions, members of the CNRx Network apply a diverse set of approaches to provide nature exposure and encourage nature engagement on their campuses. In many cases, members are collecting data to evaluate the reach and impact of such efforts. The primary approaches can be organized into the categories of Nature Rx programs, physical infrastructure, online maps, courses, communications, and nature-oriented activities.
